The number of people filing for state unemployment benefits for the first time in the US was unchanged last week and remained at a 20-month high, staying elevated for the third straight week.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Thursday showed 264,000 new claims were filed for jobless benefits on a seasonally adjusted basis in the week ended June 17, unchanged from the prior week's upwardly revised level – the highest level of initial claims activity since October 2021.
The figure exceeds economists' median expectation of 260,000 new claims.
The data on the weekly change in initial jobless claims by state (not seasonally adjusted) shows that the biggest jump spike occurred in California, apparently thanks to the massive layoffs in tech sector over the past few months.
